No, it doesn't happen literally daily. Check figures for "runway incursions" and you'll see that. Regarding the controller doing a good job, have the tapes been made public?

Heard the audio from the Chicago Midway event on a reddit thread (sorry, don't have the link anymore) and ATC clearly, multiple times told the smaller jet to hold its position and not to enter the runway. It did anyway.
Not an excuse whatsoever, but I'm betting the business jet was on the wrong frequency. But crap...not having clearance to cross a runway and doing it anyway is a bad, bad thing. I'm wondering what the DCA incident was about.
Thank you for the clarification. However, go arounds for spacing shouldn't be routine either and may not have occurred if we had enough experienced ATC personnel controlling the traffic. Go arounds are quite expensive for airlines and pax that miss connections.
No worries! I disagree though. Keeping things tight enough that there has to be an occasional go around because traffic missed the high speed taxiway or whatever can be done without risking violating separation minimums and doesn’t compromise safety and allows the airport to operate at max capacity.
