The God and Goddess were/are EU budgetary austerity, the most powerful, and covert, present from Merkel/Rutte/Stubb & Co. to Putin. Public investment in defence and budgetary austerity are almost not compatible.

I have always disagreed w the downsizing of Norway's defense after 1989, but now things should get better. If only they weren't so stupid, and allow Russians to buy cabins and build churches near /overlooking the bases. But I'm just a paranoid ex New Yorker who remembers 1962, what do I know...

Problem is that Europe is a collection of nation states each with different languages, cultures, views of history, and the infernal toxic nationalism that blinds and twists the ability to understand world and European history and that sharing unity of purpose with neighbours is really important now

Why are modern western governments unable to learn from previous mistakes? Serious question here, is it an overabundance of caution about what voters think? Reliance on the optimistic view that "these things sort themselves out eventually"? It's really baffling.

Hegel was right: "what experience and history teach is that nations and governments have never learned anything from history and have never acted in accordance with the lessons that could have been drawn from it". Even when governments recognise parallels with past errors, they tend to repeat them!
