I felt Jake Gyllenhal was not good in that movie. Always thought he just couldn’t keep up with Heath Ledger. Maybe miscast. But I don’t think he got really good until later in his career, except Donnie Darko which was maybe a good fit.

But that whimper you reference stuck with me, though I never really gave it thought. You’re right, she was outstanding in that movie. Michelle Williams was very good as well and Heath was just phenomenal, down to his voice opening up when he tells the story of the gay guys who were murdered.

Fantastic imagery in that movie. The music and the cinematography. Also did this amazing thing by depicting your safety and civilization in that part of the country, alongside the violence. Usually those movies blend the two, making rural US terrifying and evil underlying.

For those who've ever been to small towns in the West, this movie was exceptionally adept at establishing Sense Of Place. Unlocked memories everywhere. I could even smell the cleaner used on the linoleum in the grocery store.
