Went to a family reunion, it was a much longer day than anticipated and I am wiped. HOWEVER very fun twist, all the people I have diagnosed as neurodivergent have diagnosed themselves! Including the boomers! They've also traced it further back up the family tree like I had. - ThreadSky

I have been wondering recently whether people getting more ND over the generations, because it really really looks like it in our family. I think there's other things that would explain it too (changing social expectations, parenting, more sensitive diagnosis etc) but it feels weird from inside.

I think modern life has made it more difficult for ND people in many ways. In the past there were more diverse jobs available and less emphasis on academic pathways.

Creative, technical & skilled craft jobs were once widespread
Tech development has pros & cons!

Yes I agree, I was saying the same earlier (someone foolishly asked why I thought more people were neurodivergent now, BIG mistake). but also the features appear to be stronger every generation for us

Interesting!

Perhaps people masked even more in the past & less so now. But also people who were a ‘bit different’ might also have ended up in institutions & hence unseen.

I know we had family members in ‘asylums’ in the 1800s.

Yep that's another big one for me on the why there's more ND people now - fewer people institutionalised and therefore more people potentially having children. I've heard wenn lawson say the same.

ND in our family = autism in ~women and ADHD/AuDHD in ~men, which I find so interesting too. And the neurotypical family members have married neurodivergent people!

I spotted this pattern in my years of running a voluntary dyslexia group (half my family are dyslexic as well as ADHD / ASC & probable dyspraxia).

So many ‘NT’ partners of ND people were left handed. I find it really interesting.
