I agree with the sentiment, but I assume it depends on the energy source. If you generate 1000 images with solar, wind or nuclear, I assume it is not that big of a problem. 4 miles with a
today's gas-efficient car is also not that much carbon.

Unnecessary additional carbon, at a point when people are just playing with AI generation for laughs and social media views, with no clear conception of the actual impacts their games are having. so they will just keep on playing, why wouldn’t they - and incurring more, unnecessary, energy costs.

And then there's the AI hardware that is used to train those models (mainly NVIDIA cards).

600 watts a pop. Thousands of cards in each datacenter that is dedicated to that (not all of them thankfully, at least for now)

And I won't start on the ecological cost of creating and fabbing them.

I'm just throwing numbers because I know them (I happen to work in that industry, though in a very sheltered, remote position let's not mask that privilege)

Yeah, and in truth... Nvidia (or anybody for that matter) did not see the AI boom craze coming.

Nobody did.

It just happens that Nvidia has been slowly exiting the gaming cards market for a while (~2017) because gaming is pocket change to them when they can make 10x more on datacenter cards

The difference between Bitcoin and AI is that everybody hated Bitcoin. It made a fortune for them (Nvidia was sanctionned later for not disclosing the amount they made)... but publicly everyone hated it.
