The Billy Connolly sketch about being Scottish and needing a week in the sun before he turned from blue to white included a line about using "factor one hundred - that's a bandage"
Do you know about PA+ ratings yet? I burn in shade and get my sunscreens mostly from Japan and Korea, where they rate protection from both UVA and UVB.
I was talking about this with my wife. Even before Trump returned they've been too limited to do a lot of wider band testing on sunscreen and alternative materials
In fairness, it could be utter bollocks. My dermatologist told me anything about 50 is a bit pointless for me anyway and I should stay in the coffin until sunset.
Its one of those things that has to do with the way SPF ratings work.
If someone is going to burn in 12 seconds, then SPF 100 doesn't make it so they won't burn, just that it'll take 1200 seconds to get to that same level of burned
More or less.
If the UV Index gets above 7 & I have to be outside for even so much as a walk to the bus, this is what I reach for, especially now that the FDA has banned most of the most elegant, effective, & affordable SPFs from Korea & Japan. An important note abt SPF -
Is the number - 30, 50, 100, whatever - only applies if *you* apply enough. Sunscreen is tested at 2 milligrams per square centimeter, which translates for most people as at least tsp for your face, ears, & front of neck & at least 1/2 tsp to include any chest.
A lot of people who apply SPF 30 are actually getting SPF 15 or less, & the majority of Americans donβt reapply. SPF above 50 doesnβt necessarily provide a ton of extra protection *if* applied correctly & reapplied regularly. It helps a lot if thereβs any chance youβre not doing math every morning!
(Some of us may have been a kid in the 90s who relied on our Mediterranean heritage rather than SPF & ended up needing to have multiple pre-cancerous spots removed from our face at 25)
(I am pleased to say my derm told me last year Iβd actually reversed sun damage over the last decade, tho!)
Comments
It was an asbestos suit and a welder's helmet
Itβs the only way to be sure.
Itβs barely adequate with multiple applications.
The sun literally poisons me.

Less than that = lower spf number.
