"oh but they don't mean you" - sure, yeah, because I have a job and I'm physically fit, yeah? what if I were to become one of those immigrants who has to be on the dole? what if I end up disabled for whatever reason? what if I end up having a ton of kids with another immigrant? what if? what if?
I keep thinking: I married an American, who now has dual citizenship. Both our children are dual citizens. Most of my wife’s colleagues have at least one other citizenship, as do many of mine. The same goes for many of the families at the school and nursery our children go to. This is normal life.
The other thing that always strikes me is that there’s always been a degree of London-baiting with this, but it’s a city where over 10% of the population live! Obviously the bet is in a FPTP system the votes don’t matter too much, but it’s such a high proportion of the population.
a society where "bad immigrants" are demonised is a society where no immigrant can truly feel welcome, because aren't we all just one wrong turn or accident away from being unemployed? on disability benefits? unable to care for our children without state help? just no such thing as a safe immigrant
also the bit that kills me is they say "oh we don't mean *you*" but they always do. The numbers rolled out aren't "bad" immigrants vs "good" immigrants. It's always totals
And like if you invert it to show the psychopathy folks see it as deranged. "In an effort to reduce net immigration, UK nationals will now pay a giant exit tax to leave." Sounds outrageous? But they're doing exactly that, just on targeted "others"
It's a group of people that politicians and the media think it is socially acceptable to hate existing, and then everyone ends up surprised that societies that focus on it end up smaller, crueller, and poorer as a result
"Net immigration was blah thousand" who cares? Some of those people employ 8,000 citizens. Some are cancer specialists for kids. Some are researchers who developed the COVID vaccine. Another is a professor teaching students at Oxford. But it's flattened to a "bad" number of homogenous "others"
when they say "they don't mean you" to me I know exactly what that means and it has to do with something the migrants they do mean can in no way change
The tone of speak to people in the real world as well they all agree also jusf drives me up the wall. I AM A REAL PERSON IN THE REAL WORLD AND BEING REFERED TO BY THE PM OF A PARTY OF LABOUR AS SOME KIND OF SKIN CANCER HURTS MY FEELINGS AND BUMS ME OUT
And my real world wife whos british btw also doesnt like it and our situation is far from unique. Its pretty uncool and not swag life to be told acc ur kind of gross and everyone i spoke to agree
