If y’all are doing the stripping of the altar, be ready to carry LOTS of stuff out of the sanctuary and chancel. It’s generally an “all hands on deck” situation for both the acolytes and Altar Guild.

This is an interesting one. No suggestive one way is better or worse, but I’ve heard of parishes who like it done in a calm and orderly manner, and at least one other where it was done the opposite way, deliberately. The chaos made the silence and emptiness after especially apparent.

Oh I DEFINITELY shattered a Christus Rex one year trying to take it off the wall in a hurry. Spent Good Friday and Holy Saturday glueing it back together.

After we moved the high altar crucifix back to the sacristy, the MC(!) ended up knocking it over by accident and cracking it in half 💀 thankfully the veneration crucifix for GF is different, but it had to be repaired by specialist artisans and we didn't get it back til after Pentecost 😩

I was a bit uneasy about the foot washing part last year myself since it was my first Maundy Thursday service. But you will be fine with it!

It's awkward, but it's supposed to be. Remember, in the Bible the disciples are very uncomfortable at first! I actually think the foot washing makes the altar stripping afterwards hit different.

i cannot recommend leaning into the nerves and awkward discomfort and doing it anyway strongly enough. i feel that i have learned a lot about the humility of discipleship through having my feet washed and turning and washing the next person’s.

The stripping of the altar is always the most powerful part of the Triduum for me. Just stunning!

Stop and look at the stripped church afterward. Feeling the desolation prepares you for both Good Friday and the Resurrection.
