Most of my books are in great condition, but sadly two of my favourites are the most damaged. Since I don’t intend to part with them I don’t feel bad attempting gentle restoration. Think I need to research better leather products but it’s going well - ThreadSky

Oh, my grandfather buys old medical journals all the time.
He buys then by the box weekly and range anywhere from 20 to 200 years.
He just reads them, writes down a few notes then donates them to the local museum and medical schools.

These books are 176 years old and were well used. I need a product that can work with very dry scuffed leather to add some shine I think, but mystery shite from my dad’s shed is sufficient for now. The spine is also lifting and the hinge is cracked bad on Vol 1 but ¯\_(ツ)_/ later issues

I’m so happy! I’m hoping to find a product that helps keep a sheen on it since it dulls down, but it may need a few more treatments considering how dry the leather is

I wonder, is there anything in them that's Obviously Wrong? Since they're from before we had modern medicine, I'm assuming some organs etc are just flat out wrong? Or is it surprisingly accurate still?

I haven’t found anything obviously wrong, just some things are missing - on the section on blood, the red blood cell category is lengthy in description and then it also basically says ‘oh there’s some white things* in there. We don’t know their purpose. Moving on’

It’s interesting to note they were a LOT more advanced than you think back then, and anatomy especially hasn’t changed much. My John Hunter book from 1786 talks about vaccination, he was Jenner’s teacher! We’re WAY past the ages of quack science in 1840

HOWEVER you can quite easily pick up ‘home doctor’ style books ~1930 and they are filled with Obviously Wrong shit, this is because they’re written by general GPs or reverends who let sexism / religion dictate, when -proper- anatomy books like this are non biased and thorough
