Spoiler. Unless The Archies or R*lf H*rris score heavily we're looking at the best 60s single being by an artist who'd been recording since 1923. I've no problem with Satchmo but it's interestign that in the decade of youth revolution he comes out on top.
HONK! Meanwhile in Germany:
01.08./15.08. The Edwin Hawkins Singers: Oh, Happy Day
01.09. Elvis Presley: In The Ghetto
15.09. Zager & Evans: In The Year 2525
1969 is coming to an end and there's still one Beatles No. 1 missing...

The next/current episode takes a bit of a swerve, lyrically, but I think there's definitely something apocalyptic in the air at the time... very much the tidal wave of the 1960s crashing onto the shores of the 1970s, to steal a Hunter S Thompson idea!
It’s a generational thing since this was a film release in 1981 when I was a teenager but to me and I’m sure others of my era one of your three number ones is forever associated with lycanthropy thanks to its use in the soundtrack. See also Blue Moon by The Marcels which you sorted a while back.

Interesting to pick up the apocalyptic vibe that seems to be creeping in towards the end of the decade.
Steward’s enquiry please! 😀
