I taught HS remedial reading for over 20 years. How was it possible for kids to reach 9th grade at a 4th grade reading level? It was not because they lacked intelligence. Few tested as dyslexic. They lacked self esteem, the practice and/or motivation for reading. They needed book time. Lots of it.

I have a neighbor who home schools 5 kids. One did graduate but the other 4 are still students in her home school. I'm not sure that a walk in the woods counts as a science class, and a swim in the isn't a physical ed class. But then again she's a trumper so education isn't a big deal evidently.

It's not just the lack of factual information. They have little coping skills to deal with their peers or adults. I think they are accustomed to being catered to. Many of them have difficulty understanding that they do not come first or that not everyone is there to cater to them.

I'm glad to hear it's not the norm. It may be a cultural thing. I'm grateful I had good public schools and children were required by law to attend. My parents thought school was a waste of time, especially for girls. It was a commonly held belief when and where we grew up.

I’ve had friends bring me their mail because they couldn’t understand it. What I don’t understand is how we went to the same schools and only one of us can read. Most were close to graduating before they dropped out so they made it nearly the whole way without improvement from grade 5 on. How? Why?

A significant part of the literacy problem is that in many schools they stopped teaching phonics based reading methods. I agree. As a retired high school remedial reading teacher, I saw with help and practice, most older students learned phonics quickly. It’s not a permanent problem, but definitely an unnecessary and harmful burden or habit to carry. Like putting shackles on a runner. Why???

I know this will rub some people wrong but the schools have to stop passing kids to the next grade if their not ready. Yes,it’s an embarrassment but so is failing the next year or years. I interviewed kids that graduated in 2007/2008 that read and do math at maybe 6th grade levels and graduated HS.
