I think the difference is that leaves about a 3rd of the country that would likely prefer a 3rd party. Jesse Ventura ran as an Independent and was Minnesota’s most popular Governor in decades.
Sure, that's fair. But a 3rd party is not, and will not ever, be a viable option. Dems had a chance to nominate a candidate that would appeal to those in the middle and they didn't. Results speak. Votes are won or lost, and moderates staying home means Dems lost those votes=defacto votes for Trump.
It's not, as the system is literally designed against it as Dems and Republicans work together on one thing - ensuring it's always a two horse race. Zooming in to the local level, sure, it's possible. Zooming out, looking big picture, it's not allowed by those in power. See: H. Ross Perot
