In a world where only entities that can afford lawyers have any power, I guess one solution is some kind of insurance (grassroots driven, not for-profit) that every creators who's concerned about this kind of thing can pay to, and which in turn pays for lawyers once it's actually needed?

I keep trying to frame this modern LLM craze with similar patterns in history, like doping in sport or fossil fuels, where the cost of getting somewhere faster was always clear, and someone did the math and concluded that it's worth risking the damage done to everyone else.

Mind you, losing a domain is new, but Itch could've just as well fallen victim to a malware scanner going nuts and advising Chrome+Firefox to block the website entirely. (Happened to Pouët before! Wasn't fun!)

We've ceded so much ground to automation, and I'm not sure if it's fixable/reversible.

that’s well said tho. i wonder about that too, if it’s even possible to reverse… and if it’s going to stay this bad, where does that leave everyone else that likes creating online independently of big platforms?

I don't know. A lot of this is a result of getting used to tiny bits of convenience at a time; e.g. people often explicitly wish for the centralization of "too many streaming services", not realizing that competition is a good thing - but if you're used to it, would you change out of principle?

Like, Steam is basically a monopoly, but if a game would choose not to come out on it, would I encourage the authors to release it on Steam? Sure. Would I buy it on some other storefront? Maybe not?

I'm as guilty of convenience as anyone, and it's hard to get away from it.

It honestly feels like the Internet is kindof sliding into the "airport security" territory where you don't want your commercial airplane to be attacked, but as you're standing in a full body scanner without your shoes on, you can't help but wonder if there isn't a better way to achieve that.

yes, just the overall story here that you could have your own “AI free” human space but still it could get taken down this way (automated “AI system” false flagging you) so it’s like… gone way past too far imo.

Oh I think more of like a network, make a small space that is resilient I guess, but you are right, with how sloppy these tools are its easy for the companies to take down whatever and blame ai
