With you. My take is, if someone derives comfort from religion I’m good. It’s once they start insisting that everyone else must conform to their brand of bullshit that I’m out.
There’s that aspect of it. Religion is like drugs. You shouldn’t be able to be in one until you’ve apprised yourself of both the benefits and the risks.
As for pretty much anything else, the younger you start, the easier it is. That's the point of baptism for Christians and all its equivalents in other religions and cults.
And that's why the family (and knowing what's going on in it at all times) is so important to EVERY religion on this planet.
Hey, being raised to believe it and the fear of its never-ending torture upon death goes a long way... latter's probably why most people are religious in the first place, haha.
I also didn't, until I met someone whose life had been such a clusterfuck of bad luck (half a dozen incurable health problems, a past of violence within the family, disastrous luck in romantic relations, terrible friends..) that religion was the only way to maintain high spirits... Placebo effect
Fear of the void after death (use philosophy instead)
A meaning of life (use sentientism instead)
Trying to find a meaning for events that have none (like the death or suffering of others, disasters) (use science instead ; not always has answers)
And as you said : being part of a community
Honestly... the best answer I can give is not really an answer
Visited my VERY Catholic Dad, we talked U.S. politics, he said the worst thing is how they indoctrinate their kids into all this Patriotic BS. 2 minutes later he was talking about how Vatican 2 was a mistake. Cognitive dissonance heyo!

A cult is a cult, whether or not it is officially authorized by any government.
And also pagan beliefs in the protection & sacredness of nature rock
