I think the really embarrassing thing is that Canada is probably about to do the exact same thing as the US, except we have to ask King Charles for permission to do it

“Exact same” sounds wrong to me, particularly if the government manages to hold on til October. People forget (apparently!) how quickly the Trump administration showed its colours and started angering people. A year is a long time away.
technically we have to ask the Governor General, the King’s official representative, and yes, technically he (or she) has the power to refuse an election or even just fire the prime minister
