Brockington came out publicly as transgender in 10th grade. His family did not support his transition, so he decided to live with a foster family. He was a drum major with the high school band and became homecoming king after collecting the most money for his school’s chosen charity. /2

Brockington used the attention he received as homecoming king to advocate for LGBTQ+ youth. He was also active in the faith community and organized a protest against police brutality. He spoke openly about the bullying he had suffered and mentored other transgender youth. /3

Brockington enrolled in the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, majoring in music education. However, he had suffered years of depression, self-harming and suicidal thoughts. He died on March 23, 2015, after being struck by several cars on I-485. The incident was ruled a suicide. /end
