The National Memorial for Peace and Justice has a long corridor that includes lists of reasons used to justify lynchings.
Reasons pointed out were false accusations including accusations of inappropriate conduct with white women, speaking out against lynching, not showing deference to whites.

Washington had been convicted of raping and murdering the wife of his employer. However, the mob didn’t wait for the justice system. They dragged him out of the court using the chain around his neck and paraded him through the street while beating and stabbing him. /2

To describe the lynching in detail would likely violate the terms of service of this platform. Suffice to say that they tortured and murdered him, then mutilated his body and saturated it with coal oil. His torso was raised and lowered over a bonfire for two hours then dragged it through town. /3

The assembled crowd treated Washington’s murder as a cause for celebration. City officials, police and schoolchildren on their lunch break were among those who gathered to watch. A professional photographer took pictures, which were printed and sold as souvenir postcards. /4

I recommend an excellent book, "At the Hands of Persons Unknown: The Lynching of Black America" by Philip Dray. Covers the historical trajectory of the crime as well as the anti-lynching crusade led by Ida B. Wells, the NAACP and many others.

I went to an elite high school (150th in the country) & only learned about Tulsa in my late 20’s
