Hansberry moved to New York at age 21, where she worked for the Pan-African newspaper Freedom and wrote about African struggles against colonialism. She was also active in the civil rights movement, which she saw as interrelated with the independence of colonial Africa. /2

Hansberry often expressed her view of these struggles from the female perspective and believed that Black women suffered greater oppression than Black men. She commented in 1959 that women who are “twice oppressed” may become “twice militant.” Sadly, she died of pancreatic cancer at age 34. /end

Hansberry played a critical role in the pivotal Baldwin-Kennedy meeting in 1963, when she forced Bobby Kennedy to listen to Jerome Smith: "You've got a great many very, very accomplished people in this room, Mr. Attorney General. But the only man who should be listened to is that man over there."

Hansberry was such a brilliant playwright, activist, and human. Baldwin was one of the greatest minds of human history. The fact that Kennedy listens and had the meeting speaks to why they went after him. He had the power to put their ideas to improve our society for the better into action.

I watched a documentary about her life and she was very special. She had a wonderful speaking voice.
