Just to explicate: I’ve lived in a lot of places. London, Beijing, Busan, Stuttgart, Helsinki, Shanghai, St. Paul. I lived in Portland for six months when my better half was travel nursing. I don’t know of any place with a greater commitment to independent and/or collective ownership than Portland.
So many grocery stores are independent. Almost every movie theater (and they have a lot of great ones). Yeah, there’s some homelessness. But anyone who’s ever studied the complex microeconomics of poverty knows that the presence of unhoused people doesn’t mean the city created them.
And honestly if the mere presence of poor people in your general vicinity offends you (as it seems to offend a number of people who visit Portland), just fuck off.
Does PDX still have the, “most strip clubs per capital” title? I remember when I lived there at some point we were dubbed that. And everyone was like, “well, yeah”
Portland is the best! If you’re staying downtown, make sure you go to Mothers for dinner and Afuri for Ramen. And the food truck park is pretty killer!

(That is an amazing piercing shop in that photo!)

I saw a long line of homeless people at a "soup kitchen". Across the street was a tall office building with people wearing suits coming in and out.
For better or worse, everyone acted like it's nothing??
I go to Bellevue and I'm wondering if I'm gonna get arrested just for how I look. You can't go certain places like that.
Meanwhile Portland DOES. NOT. GIVE. A. FUCK.
Enjoy your visit, just don’t stay.
PS I do truly love our city.
