Don't disagree with shifting the tax burden towards high levels of wealth & keen on other Green Party policies too, however, am still concerned by their NATO scepticism, given how belligerent the Russian Federation is these days.

Also, from what I gather, a lot of wealth is tied up in assets. They generally can only be taxed when sold, which we do via capital gains tax. This was increased in the autumn budget last year. Yes, they can always do more, but to imply nothing has been done is nonsense.

Whilst there is clearly scope to sort out situations like the Duke of Westminster and other big landholders wiser voices than me (eg. jdportes) have cautioned against seeing wealth tax as the solution. We will all need to accept tax rises, that's a progressive tax system at work

Is income tax really the only way though? I can't help feeling the Tobin tax (minute taxation on billions of financial transactions) and correctly taxing multinationals on the volume of their business in the UK might also be productive, and far more popular politically speaking?

Fair point. There are options like the ones you suggest. My point and that of economists I trust is that at the end of the day the tax burden will fall on the middle ground because of the number of people in it when you have a progressive system

To be direct, this is still too pedestrian. if he wants to propel Greens to the next level he needs to work on his charisma. Maybe post videos of him engaging with groups of regular people, sharing visionary ideas, get an image makeover. He needs to be projecting himself as a PM candidate.

I don't think his comments were entirely unreasonable, but I don't feel knowledgeable enough to confidently say.

From what I've seen, I do feel confident in saying it's contentious and given our populist landscape, perhaps it is better left parked for the foreseeable.

Just look across the channel to France. Maybe if people who claim nuclear takes ‘too long’ wouldn't have opposed and blocked it for 40 years, we’d already have a fleet of zero-carbon power stations and be on our way to net-negative, not just net-zero.

Wealth tax returns never meet the lofty estimates made by their proponents because the tax system is ridiculously easy for a tax lawyer to manipulate. I guarantee that the moment a wealth tax is put in place then the wealthy will move their money to trusts, off-shore or hide their ownership.

Do the tax reforms first, that will require legislation, which will take some time. Then use the new legislation to not only change the tax rules but criminalise the industry that is making a living helping the rich to avoid tax.
