There’s a reason there’s a movement (unrelated to this idiocy) to film in LA/the states generally. It’s so much more affordable to film in Canada, east Europe, etc. Crew are getting hit hard, but this is just gonna screw them harder

I can't figure out what he thinks he's putting a tariff on. The distribution rights? The hardware to deliver the digital files? Does he think he can tax the full production cost? All of it is absolutely insane.

My assumption is the production companies or the LLCs usually created for each project. Makes it harder for each project to get into the black, scares producers, and in his mind gets them to film here. But all that does is make everything more expensive and make it so less is made

When I lived in Chicago, I wasn’t thrilled that Shameless only filmed there 2 weeks a season, maybe 4 weeks tops. Didn’t love working on a feature in Portland that only did location stuff here and everything else in Vancouver. But all this does is make it so those crucial days for crew just vanish

2) Does this include films where part of the movie is made elsewhere. For example, Sinners had a tax credit statement from Canada and Australia at the end of it, because I think the computer effects were done there?

It literally could be anything, from where the film was shot. Edited or written to who works on the film, to who distributes it to who streams it. It’s so across the board so he can pick and choose.

Or to only release things in digital formats ever again, unless USTR is planning on tossing the moratorium for tariffs on digital goods in the trash when they were aiming to make it permanent. Gonna be something if the EU goes, "then we can tariff all downloads from your techbros now".
