There was a digital code, just no physical. Sony’s not alone in this though. It’s a result of there being two versions of the consoles: digital and physical.

It’s not cost efficient to make two versions of the CE when you can make one that works for everyone. Blame digital purchases for dominant.

Yeah, PlayStation went almost all in on live services and we're seeing the impact of that. Many of them were cancelled, studios now have to start on new games that we won't see for years, or the studios just get closed.
