Today alone I've seen several people claim Doom Eternal was widely hated and nearly killed the series.
The highest-rated, biggest-selling game in the series was clearly what sank it. Yeah. That sounds like a totally rational person would say.

(I still haven't played it because of DLC price shenanigans by Bethesda.)
I don't regret having bought and played it, and I did finish it, but I did find it to be several big steps backwards from 2016. Way too rigid in its overall moment-to-moment flow and its plot didn't stay out of the way like in 2016.
There's a list of widely acclaimed things that I don't just dislike, but cannot see why people even think they are good. It's jarring.
Ridiculous mindset and behaviour.
