I don't know about sales but a lot of people I know said they hated Eternal.

(I still haven't played it because of DLC price shenanigans by Bethesda.)

Buyer's remorse is a thing!

I don't regret having bought and played it, and I did finish it, but I did find it to be several big steps backwards from 2016. Way too rigid in its overall moment-to-moment flow and its plot didn't stay out of the way like in 2016.

AND, arguably the most important thing it did, inspired an insane amount of FPS games. Deadlink, Shadow Warrior 3, Roboquest and, my favourite, Turbo Overkill. None would exist the way they do without Eternal’s influence & community.

The doom eternal stuff was absurd said the same at the time just look at the sale numbers lol. Just because some or a vocal amount of people hated the game in comparison to 2016 does not mean it was widely not well recieved

And it's not just Doom, obviously. Look at some of the critical backlash against Blue Prince. A bunch of people who can't just say 'this is what I dislike', but immediately escalate to 'This is clearly a bad and abusively-designed game and YOU PEOPLE can't SEE you're TRAPPED in a SKINNER BOX!'.

I get it in a way. When something is so widely loved, and you hate it, it's easier to think "something is wrong with them" instead of "this is incompatible with me"

There's a list of widely acclaimed things that I don't just dislike, but cannot see why people even think they are good. It's jarring.

I wonder if it's solely a video game thing, or does it extend to other art mediums as well. It feels like "people" are just way more combative around their likes/dislikes nowadays (due to a variety of reasons), but to me it seems like they are especially vile around video games, for some reason?

The reverse is so true too. I didn't like DOOM 2016, for reasons I detailed in a Steam review. I copped a fair bit of abuse from people who couldn't stand anyone not liking what they liked.

It's just tiring.

It baffles me that there is a non-trivial amount of people out there who genuinely can't wrap their minds around the fact that different people have different tastes. Whenever people like something I don't my immediate reaction is "I'm jealous" not "You're stupid, you're wrong, and I hate you."

I think it has to do with usual social media stunts and "hot takes". But also eternal numbers are hard to interpret (covid, also it's a very different game from 2016 that many ppl started but also droppd) so it's also hard say that eternal good cos sales (I love eternal but is an easy game to hate)
