Today our weapon is a strong economy. We must work together to make our economies strong enough to withstand Trump's tariffs & economic jiggery-pokery.

The economic and geopolitical arguments for a much closer relationship are fundamentally strong; public opinion has largely concluded that the 2016 Leave vote was a mistake; and our political parties will eventually recognise that there are votes to be won by taking a more ambitious approach. /2

That shouldn't put off rejoining, now we can see the detriment of leaving the EU on trade and our security. The next 4 years will be unpredictable, and possibly destabilizing, by the incumbent POTUS. I believe a UK closely aligned to Europe is better for us.

I believe we’re better off being more closely aligned with Europe too, but Trump doesn’t change the fundamental facts: the EU doesn’t trust us, rejoining will take at least 2 parliaments & the RW parties will leave when they get in. Why would the EU take us back?

I will not return in detail to the state of the UK economy, but it is clear that the government’s attempts to promote higher growth require much greater intensity. Reducing trade barriers with our biggest trading partner can only help the UK. /3

As for the geopolitical case, isolation from the EU, in the second Trump era, does not look like a wise move. On public opinion, the polls have long and consistently shown that, given the choice, a majority of the public would favour re-joining the EU. /4

More striking in recent days were Kemi Badenoch’s criticisms of the Conservatives for triggering Brexit without developing a plan for growth. This argument was made in a speech conceding that the Conservatives made mistakes in office. /5

This, of course, is not to say that Badenoch is arguing that leaving the EU was a mistake but it is certainly not a robust defence of the status quo. The Conservative Party owns Brexit but even its leader is now acknowledging that it is not working. /6

On the merits of her case, speaking as a member of the cabinet when #brexit was triggered, she has a point that it would have been better to have come up with a plan for Brexit . But, in practice, delaying our departure would have been politically impossible given the views of Brexiteer MPs. /7

Both reasons were why I voted to remain in the EU. A moment's thought made it clear that geopolitically, we should be aligned with Europe. Events since 2016 have shown so. The numbers show how badly UK economy and trade has been affected by brexit.

Our 6 million small businesses have been reduced by >14,000 because of brexit bureaucracy and red tape. Britain's small businesses are described as the "backbone of British industry". They've taken a hammering. Johnson and Frost have little / no understanding of business.
