Most of the land was owned by the land was owned by the state, which was the Ottoman Empire until the end of WW I, when they were defeated & then the British Empire gained control of the Palestine territory. They renamed it British Mandatory Palestine.

The Arab Muslims had been attacking Jewish settlements for decades & the Jews formed militias to fight back. There were bad actions on both sides. The British realized the 2 sides couldn’t get along & commissioned the Peel Commission to divide the Territory between the 2 groups.

Both sides rejected it. Then WW II broke out putting any plans on the territory on hold. After WW II, the UN drew up a new partition plan based on land ownership.

The Jews accepted it. & declares their portion the independent state of Israel. The Arab Muslims rejected it because they wanted the entire territory for themselves.

The day after Israel became a state six neighboring Arab countries declared war against Israel & the Arabs in Palestine joined the Arab Liberation Army. Israel won, holding on to land granted by the partition plus gaining some more territory in the war.

What they now call the “Nakba” was after the war the majority of Arab Muslims choosing to leave Israel. One million of them remained behind in Israel where they became Israeli citizens & them & their descendants are
