There is the immediate and then the cascade of harm due to loss of funds. We are already seeing this play out with loss of critical medications, services, and disruptions of trials. We know that this is already costing lives. 2/

But there is also the power vacuum that this dramatic/rapid withdrawal creates. And in my experience these vacuums unfortunately enable other interests to step in - not the ones that reimagine the world for better, but others that perpetuate exploitation and harm. 3/

Unless enough resources & political will are amassed in those spaces by those who actually partner with local communities in supporting better, more equitable visions, I fear that enormous damage will be done to those who have been systematically marginalized through colonial/postcolonial systems. 4

Colonial/postcolonial systems are vast, and perpetuated by complex, and intersecting forces that include but also go well beyond the US. There many players for whom this rapid collapse presents nefarious and exploitive opportunities. I hope that there are sufficient resources to counteract them. fin
