Electricity needs are rising, and will continue to rise to meet growing demand from data centers, manufacturing, electrification and more. And the vast majority of new resources being built to meet that growing demand are wind, solar and battery energy storage.

But the version of the reconciliation bill passed by the house would effectively kill the credit for new projects. That means many projects that we're counting on over the next several years to meet growing load have to go back to the drawing board.

Updating planning, redoing competitive procurements, restructuring financial arrangements, can all set timelines back for months to years. As projects get cancelled and delayed, there's no backfill.

There are few other options to meet growing electricity demand. The cost of new gas turbines has exploded and lead times are 5+ years.

Without other options, utilities will be forced to further delay providing service to new customers, slow walk electrification efforts, and will be left in a vulnerable position for the next heat wave or cold snap that challenges the grid.

Of course, this is an entirely avoidable situation, and hopefully cooler heads will prevail. But if anything like the House reconciliation bill becomes law, our grid is in for challenging times.
