True but WW2 was defending themselves (mostly) on home territory against an enemy that literally wanted to exterminate them. Compare that with Afghanistan - a war of choice - only around 20,000 killed and 50,000 injured. Protests and arguably contributed to the fall of the Soviet Union.

I don't know but it's a lot. I would say the biggest difference was Gorbachev. Afghanistan was accompanied by Chernobyl, prohibition and Pieriestrojka.
Then '90 came and with them trauma. We (The West) needed an easy explaination for fall of USSR and chose Afghanistan. It's a fable to feel better.

I remember as an 11 yr old when Walter Cronkite would give us the body count for the week during the VN war. The losses by the US were real as I had a cousin killed. But the losses by the enemy were even larger. As a 6th grader I wondered when Walter Cronkite said enough was enough
