But why are you maintaining the spacing on your own? It's something it does automatically when you set the toolbar style to `NSWindowToolbarStylePreference`.

I've been using https://github.com/emiscience/CCNPreferencesWindowController in my AppKit and Catalyst projects, with some very small modifications and a wrapper class that sets things to look modern. I can share the src if wanted.
