We used to do this and I thought it was really great, we also had one where they were asked to add features to the homework in person. Also good.

I went one step further. I gave them the code of a basic existing service, and the architecture of the system and discussed its current issues and how to improve it. Because unless you are employee #1 you are gonna work on top of somebody's code and within some technical constraints.

Making the work as close to the actual work they’re doing is so important. One pet peeve of mine is doing data science or analytical interviews on data that has nothing to do with your company. Just take a problem thats from your company!

My favorite interview was back at Qt where they just gave me a bunch of broken code and no instructions but allowed to ask any question.

Not only was it easy to demonstrate skill in a realistic setting, it was also super fun.

I am so here for this far more mature process. Also lacking in formulaic checkbox questions and allows a dive into comprehension and communication over rote learning and learn to test.

I love the idea of this but we're already seeing so many candidates use LLMs (yes even in live sessions!) that I imagine it's getting less and less representative of how that person works and thinks on their own.

Yeah I love this style too; really gives you a sense of what it’s like to work with someone moreso than whiteboarding.
