They really need to sort out the age ratings. Ok if the subject matter is ‘too old’ for certain ages, but so many kids aren’t suddenly ready for a chunky novel when they turn 9, or a trauma filled YA when they turn 13. Yeah we have been adding parent advisory to our site but I’ve realised it’s getting cut off in the synopsis. We have do have reading age and reading age themes. But this is a bloody struggle to figure out. Be much easier if the just had reading age and advisory themes like movies printed on them.

100%. I didn’t read fiction for many many years as a child because chunky books didn’t feel accessible for what I now know is my ADHD brain. Now we have so much more choice but books need to be accessible and we need ways of conveying important info re content.

Books should be age 8-80+. The covers can hint, of course, and include a description of themes etc for more child-focused titles, but the idea that any story comes with a specific age range is stupid. Different readers will want it at different times.

Poetry novels & comic books are popular. My “reluctant” reader son isn’t reluctant…he just finds long text & some of the sizes of books daunting. And Audible books have been a MAHOOSIVE help in making them less 😱.Often he’ll listen and read at same time or listen to one loads then read it himself …

If it helps at all, you can tell him I'm a professional author and I listen to books mostly vs reading them with my eyes. Unless it's a comic or a reference book (cos I need to cross reference).
