Grimly, this is part of why DC is bad ground - because when you include N. Virginia and Maryland, the protest they're going to have to fire on is likely to be majority white.

January 6 drew something like 50,000 MAGA folks to DC, from across the country.
The 2017 women's march put ten times that number into DC's streets. Obviously no way to be certain that an anti-coup protest could recapture that energy, but you can't rule it out.

Agreed, the number to protest or riot might be low. What if those guys are deputised? How many cops are there, compared to how many on the other side or unwilling to use force to disperse a crowd?
Once he declares them terrorists and calls in the active duty military, a lot of the country is going to support him, unless the media actively opposes that framing.
They seem to be going along with his framing of judicial opposition.
