It's always hard to predict the future and there's a good chance I'm wrong, but my impression is that we're now going through one of those break periods in between eras.

Like 1914 started the end of the Victorian age.

I always figured we'd see the first hot war between nuclear powers and probably the first 'tactical' use of a nuclear weapon in my lifetime, but I was kinda hoping it'd be rather later in my lifetime than right now.

Read a chilling comment on the other site (can't find it again) to the effect of "maybe the worst long term outcome is that India and Pakistan use nuclear weapons and it doesn't result in global annihilation, thereby lowering the threshold for nuclear use in future conflicts elsewhere in the world."
