I find I am really curious about what the lower-bound threshold for the robo-tickets is. Like, I haven't heard of anyone getting a robo-ticket for 65mph in a 60, for instance. In any case, I think robo-tickets are probably good, on the balance. - ThreadSky

I think it's almost always 10/11mph over. Which makes the whingeing even more embarrassing.

"I got ticketed for going over the speed limit" -> sympathetic, we've all been there

If the problem is that the real social convention (speed of traffic) is wildly different than the paint-on-metal convention, they ought to nudge up the road's speed limit and keep the robo-tickets in place.

this is fascinating to me. why do you think the enforced speed limit should be based on the social convention? if the speed people are driving by convention is too high and dangerous, isn’t the point of enforcing the speed limit to drive that down to a safer speed?

is the purpose of a speed limit to stop people from driving above some percentile (say 80th) of how fast people tend to drive on that road otherwise, or is it to reduce death and injury by stopping people from driving an unsafe speed?

General consensus amongst drivers is that conventional speeds slightly above the current limits are *not* too high or too dangerous, and I've seen little evidence to the contrary.

what is your threshold for “too dangerous” and how many lives is each additional 5mph added to a speed limit worth?

a quick search indicates that over 12k people were killed in 2021 because of speeding. does that sounds good to you or would you like to lower that number?

also if there is a general consensus among drivers, it’s something like “drive the speed of traffic” or “drive a speed that *feels* safe on a given road” both of which are directly downstream of 1. how roads are built and 2. what the enforced speed limit is or isn’t

"If I drove this section of road a thousand times at this speed, would I crash even once" is a good starting point.

"12k dead in 2021 due to speeding" without breaking down how far over which limit the car was going is inane.

IMO the German model where hard limits only exist for low-speed areas, large trucks, and the rightmost road while on the autobahn its lane priority that is aggressively enforced is better. The biggest risk of crash is someone weaving between vehicles, so if they just floor it on the right…

Where I am, it's 10pmh over unless it's enforcing a school zone where it's 2mph over. The cameras that detect if someone is driving around a stopped school bus have a 0 mph threshold.

It varies by district. In DC, by law the cameras can't issue tickets unless you're going at least 5mph over the limit. In reality all of them are set so they only give tickets if you're going at least 11mph over the limit.

31mph in a 20 zone is a significant amount of speeding.
