The global aid sector is quite literally on the brink of death right now and the human fallout globally is already obscene and will keep getting much, much worse.

The issue is how much weight the US has. You're 27% of the world's economy, you're going to be a significant proportion of the worlds aid. 0.18% of your GNI is comparatively low

It's the "richest large country/largest rich country" problem.
US aid is (was) critical simply because the US is so rich, even as the US spends less than many other states.
