A few infrared B&W pics from semi-final soccer action last weekend. I always enjoy the upper level of play by all teams when they make the state playoffs.

Thanks! I bring my infrared camera when I cover sports... if it's sunny out, or I want to experiment. This day I had no assignment or connection to any schools. The turf was getting too hot, making most "normal" pics unusable. So I went with "how will IR do?"

Good stuff. I have to say I love the mono treatment of the IR shots, never really been a big fan of the colour versions - though the two either side of the central mono one in your grid do have a nice mood.

I’m wondering what you mean by the turf getting too hot and how that affects the pics?

The turf is plastic grass with rubber fill. It gets hot when the sun shines on it and worse if there is no wind to sweep it away. You have to limit how far across the field you can shoot. You end up with missed focus and inconsistent sharpness. The worst I've seen...Lumen field. Large bowl..no wind

Also those pitches are a bit of an environmental disaster - they absorb no water, provide zero space for nature and (in the uk) the crumb is made from old car tyres which is carcinogenic if ingested.

The schools and most small colleges don't have the resources to manage grass fields. I lost my last dirt field from my usual stadiums in 2017. Luckily I was there for the final mud-bowl. I miss it! Lumen Field in Seattle will have to pull their turf and put in grass for the world cup.

Ah right I understand now (I had actually seen that previous post by you, just couldn’t quite work it out). I suppose it’s what gets called ‘heat haze’.

I’ve only photographed on those pitches a couple of times and not ever had that problem.

I’ve played on them though and don’t like it.
