When I was in school we had an RCA Spectra 70/46G that was machine language compatible with the IBM 360. We all carried the 360 "Green Card". We used a four card header that knew how to interpret an object module (destination, size, start address, etc). cont.

The IPL loaded and ran the first card, which knew how to load and run a three card program that understood the standard OML Object Module Loader standard. My buddy and I wrote our own OML and got it down to 76 bytes, leaving room for his initials. Overlaying code allowed a program longer than 80.

Just the other day I had a younger guy find a random punch card laying around the office and he had no idea what it was.

Oh boy. Pup… you’re in for a long story that, if you listen carefully, will explain a lot about how things still work today.

i remember going to my Moms work in the 70s and they had big mainframe computers and seeing them feed in punch cards, thankfully started programming well after that, but still cool. One of the retro vendors I've bought stuff from uses or used to use old punch cards as some of the packing material.
