Bruv I can tell you from experience that asking an officer to see their badge can lead to a bad time. Plain clothes officers can detain you as well as an uniformed officer. And saying "no" can be listed as "resisting arrest". It's a bit of problem

Bit of a tangent, but there was a lot of "how to verify someone claiming to be police actually is" stuff in the UK after an actual police officer raped and murdered a woman, Sarah Everard, in 2021. Police had also escalated at the peaceful vigil for her, and attacked and arrested women there.

It's all performative. It's not about keeping people safe, it's about being perceived to. It's about shifting the blame onto the victims. It's about avoiding doing any self-examination or changing anything about how they actually operate.

I’ve never met a cop who would understand OR appreciate this. They’d just take offense and get more aggressive. I guess, according to this quote, those were fake cops. :P
