i don't think artstyle stealing is a big deal especially when someone is clearly inspired. ok that said, I am a lil put off by people who see an artist and kinda just straight up, pretend to be them. not even being inspired art wise but, aesthetic and personality wise... eough - ThreadSky

Omg you have no idea, i remember being like 14 and being super inspired by an artist known as Twisted-Doctor (before sleepykinq) and i had SO many people harassing me over it 😭 I don't think art style theft is a real thing...

nah i’ve had ppl try to copy my personality n act like me. it’s way weird fr weirder than just copying my style. i cared about style copying when i was like 16 but now i’m pushing 30 and idgaf lol. def stranger when they get parasocial or try to be like the artist on a personal level.

ive seen a subgenre of this where someone named themselves in a similar way to vivziepop, styled their signature similar to vivzies, and straight up has almost the same style and makes the same stylistic choices, but "doesnt know what a vivziepop is"

Idealistically, people who are heavily inspired by others' art study/practice the things they like ABOUT that style and allow it to kind of melt into their own to create a shift in their own without completely taking on someone else's existence (more or less)

It's one thing to take parts of differet styles and mix them together, and it's a different thing to just take the artstyle

The artstyle is the vibe, and if you're taking one you're also taking the other, which well, at some point just becomes impersonation

you cant "take" an art style though. you can copy it, sure, but there will always be something in there that makes it yours.

you know how steven universe has a lot of variation in how characters draw? thats professionals trying to emulate a style. art style "theft" is just emulation.

Art styles can't be copyrighted, anybody can copy others style as long as they don't claim to be the artist there shouldn't be any problem. Also copying art styles requires a lot of skills.

Nothing I said was about legality, and there's still a huge difference between inspiration and copying someone, if you do something similar yet different enough for others to see that it's made by someone else, that's completely fine

Copying styles holds no problem, if somebody can't differentiate between two draws with the same style is more of a small issue. As long as the person copying the style don't claims to be the original artist there should not be any problem.

Not so long ago fandom dog piled a new artist who was selling commissions with a famous style, but he never lied and always made sure everybody knows he wasn't that artist. Still he got dogpiled by a +20k followers artist/fans.

isn't the whole point of developing your artstyle just taking queues and inspiration off of other people's techniques and applying your own twist to it or something? for example when I had to draw a character with muscles I just looked at my rick and morty poster cuz it had a dude with big arms
