i feel like ODD gets misdiagnosed cause the person who diagnoses is like "Well I hate everything they do and are so they must be oppositional on purpose. ODD"
yeah now that you mention it when I was in boarding school it was only ever the black kids in my dorm that were referred to as ODD cases. I knew mental health professionals are all abusers but I didn't know the system extended to racial prejudice. Though I should've expected as such
Represent I sure did love being the Token Bad Negro
Sure did love when that one lady called the school and accused me of “threatening her son with an edged weapon” after I poked him with a protractor
Really loved it when the precious white people called the principal and told him I was molesting their daughter after eight-year-old me said she was the prettiest girl in the whole school and I hoped we got to grow up and go on dates together
Psychiatrists when they have to be adhere to "moral guidelines" and not just do cocaine and tell people that their issues stem from a deep need to impregnate their own mom
White kids: "aw, they just can't control themselves, poor thing, let's put them in all the special classes and treat them like a seven year old"
Black kids: "Evil. Intentionally defiant. Let's kill this one with rocks and hammers"
ODD is like BPD and other B cluster personality disorders but for kids. Basically a poorly defined mental illness weaponized against struggling and traumatized humans to institutionalize and disregard their pain.
Also, even as a white ODD kid, black ODD kids I grew up with were treated MUCH worse and tbh witnessing my neurodiverse peers be threatened with juvy kind of!!! Radicalized me a bit.
Society really is designed around decent wealthy cis straight NT white men and no one else isn’t it
And the less categories you fit into, the more grossly negligent it will be when you inevitably don’t fit into the square hole
i was mixed up in the troubled teen industry and the other white kids in the program got to be called "misunderstood" or "denied the right resources" but black kids were "mouthy", "rude", or straight up "bad" for behaving the same way. Not to mention there weren't any non-white therapists there.
I mean in all fairness ODD actually fits me pretty well I don't disagree with the diagnosis, but I dont doubt there's a lot of false diagnosis out there because a kid asked "Why"
ODD really is one of those disorders where I have to stop and say think, not doing whatever your told or questioning authority is labelled as mental illness… it really do be just straight authoritarianism out there
Unironically yeah. But even if they’re not a trauma response you’re not mentally ill for being a child who isn’t doing as you’re told… that just makes someone a kid. It’s like… normal?? There’s a whole stereotype of the rebellious teen for a reason! Desire for autonomy
Mom died of colon cancer snd dad is court ordered to finally help me pay for living expenses after he and my mom fooled ke i to signing over conservatorship
Oppositional Defiant Disorder or something, right?
I didn’t like gifted as a kid for all the typical inflict-burnout-on-children stuff, but that pissed me off as a kid. Kids way smarter than me got thrust into SpecEd when I was a space cadet.
It’s just the family guy tsa meme, but with babies.
Ive never heard of ODD before, but tell me WHY when I went to look it up the diagram is just brown ppl😭 like yeah it could be a random coincidence but that just seems telling
No literally cause I read the shit and was like???? Being disrespectful???? Arguing with adults??? How is this mental health shit, even 'normal' children do this. Its so?????
the fact how this sheet is allergic to centreing the real problems of the percievedly "malignant" child really shows how much of a political tool this classification is more than anything else.
failed psychology i have no doubt this has made it worse for everyone.
We had to fight to get my cousin the right diagnosis (adhd) instead of ODD. It especially frustrates me because his (white) mom has always been incredibly neglectful towards him, anyone with a brain could see him acting out was to get his mom to pay attention to him (1)
I'm incredibly protective over him because I see how shitty his parents treat him. His mom literally told me once that he "gets evil" after he plays video games. Like. What? Why are you calling your child evil? What the fuck?
Not to mention what she was describing as him "getting evil" was clearly overstimulation and having little control over his emotions because he's. Yaknow. A CHILD.
The fact that there's an official disorder that's just "this child is too mean to me too often" is fucking obscene. And it being constantly applied to black kids just so that there's some new not-yet-taboo to say "this colored child is pathologically evil" makes it 100x worse.
A lot of kids marked as "difficult" or "aggressive" literally are just frustrated at being treated like trash. I've volunteered to work with "difficult" kids and they're literally fine if you just respect them as human beings

I really need to find a way to make this world better.

Like this reads as "bullshit reasons white adults dreamed up to torture black kids and indigenous kids in residential schools" 🙃

it's not you I'm just on guard 😭
