in declaring any art as non political, they make it political. the art we create comes from out experience with the world and ourselves which is all political to some degree.
I feel like apolitical art is out there, somewhere. But the instant someone tries to use something as an example of apolitical art, they have immediately given it a political quality.
i still definitely don't agree that all art is political, but yeah, that in particular is a very dumb take (and also feels kinda demeing towards NSFW art in general)
*posts boring anime about kids in school doing a romance*
*Its entire existence is couched on the assumption of heterosexuality and the value systems that contribute to what is considered acceptable for attraction and success in society*
we think about this a lot cause even in really bland corporate art there are choices that indicate some sort of experiential thought process and message
the mistake that people make when they say that "not all art is political" is that they assume that all politics begins and ends with the current popular talking points of those in power and those who are given a microphone and a platform by those in power
"politics" includes the big topics like lgbt rights and socioeconomic systems, yes, but it also includes more nuanced and subdued ideas that we either don't talk about a lot or that we take for granted or that are just kind of on the fringe
and even if art isn't intended to be political, it is still created by people who live their lives in a world shaped and contextualized by politics, and that rubs off on everything we create in some form or another even if we don't realize it
“Politics” is process of deciding Government Policy and what people want as Policy are inherently informed by who they are and what they believe in and those things are the exact same things that inform the things they create and why.
Even the mere attempt to create art that has absolutely zero political nature is in of itself an intensely political act as it is a rejection of concept of things inherently being political.
It is not possible to make something and not have it be political in some way.
Yes! I'm focusing on this in the furry fandom foremost, where I'm planning to give talks about the underground comix of the 80s 90s etc. which included sex and nudity but were comedy or slice of life or so much else.
Reducing all sex to porn reduces what it means to be human.
that's so cool!! Blossom went back into headspace for a bit but I love this idea, oftentimes it feels like the furry fandom is rly disconnected from the queer liberation movement sometimes which is disappointing. Furries are a form of counterculture but it doesn't feel like it sometimes :/
I completely agree! I'm running a minimum of 2 panels at every convention I'm going to be at going forward intended to encourage the radically accepting, punk, and counter-culture values the fandom's been founded on!
'It's just cute animal costumes' is queer erasure and I'm not gonna take it!!
yesss I agree, also it's a shame that punk isn't more mainstream in the furry fandom bc literally everyone who combines battle jackets, piercings, general punk aesthetics with fursuits are the coolest people ever
Omg, YES. I have been thinking a lot lately that the structure of internet and media has robbed us of SO MUCH art that is ABOUT sex if it isn't simply about BEING PORN!!
Oh yes very much so without a doubt. Art in any form is always subjective and open to interpretation. And can be interpreted as being either political or non-political.
That being said, politics affects real life and influences us (subtly and not) so its kind of hard for it to not affect art too.

Cute art piece.
*softcore furry porn with queer undertones and body positivity that is infact, inherently political*
*Its entire existence is couched on the assumption of heterosexuality and the value systems that contribute to what is considered acceptable for attraction and success in society*
The Act of Creation Is Fundamentally Political.

Most of them are Trumpists, but sometimes they're just people who hate having such things pointed out to them because they enjoyed their ignorance.
my art is even more political than I thought, goddamn
I feel like it's more all art can be INTERPRETED as political? Doesn't mean that was the intended message. Something something death of the author.
Either way, it does get pretty annoying after a bit- even in jest.
