I would add to this absolutely correct take that some in the CDU are responding to the same info environment as the AfD, while others are actually paying attention to what AfD networks are saying about them.

The split on this in the CDU/CSU is not left/right but between those who think they can leverage AfD popularity and those who actually are paying attention to the AfD’s stated goal of destroying the CDU/CSU as a dominant political force.
