I used to be in a kink chat with some ahole mods that believed in "no politics uwu" and it was impossible to talk about anything THEY saw as political. Anti-LGBT+ laws in the US? Political. Discussing HOW these laws impacted us? Political. Arguing the very existence of nuance? POLITICAL.

They eventually banned me when I pointed out their illogical determination of what was or wasn't political and how EVERYTHING was inherently political. They were already fed up with me tearing down and disproving their far-right beliefs, so they were itching to get rid of me. This was how they did.

Maybe, but remember that forums without shouting matches are a better product and also easier to admin. Plenty of forums have have had oppressive moderations policies for years and have kept their pseudo monopolies.

The hard reality is that a plurality of users are politically disengaged and flame wars makes them leave forums. If they are kept on side, no political faction can defeat because they won't have a critical mass of users to make an alternative. No-politics moderation is often a winning play.

I think this line of thinking depends on their being an even split politically within a given hobby. And I think depending on the hobby that's not always the case.
