True but I have come across some truly useless degrees.
For example, an engineering degree which never taught or used calculus. I felt sorry for the poor guy I was interviewing who'd wasted 3 or 4 years hoping to become an engineer.

That's a bad course not a useless degree. The conversation is about the value of education being about more than its contribution to the economy but also the enrichment of society. A society of brilliant engineers might build great things but would be a poor place to live.

If people want to do philosophy or English lit then fine but let's make sure they're clever people who will be taught valuable stuff.
Too often going to university is like going to a holiday camp with homework .

Sure. I get that. Too many people equate rigour with, say, science and engineering degrees. We need people educated to a high level in disciplines aside from their economic value.

I think that going to university is a sort of valuable social education too. I wish more had the luxury.

Clever children should go to university the rest would be better doing other things. Half of our children go to university now. I would maintain it's too many.

I think I agree with that too. We really do lack top class technical and craft education provision. It's not well-regarded or invested in. I think of my own kids. One is not academic but where will they find a top-class education in artistic craft which they have aptitude and enthusiasm for?
