Does the Pichler unit have an option for a direct vent range hood? I can’t believe Zehnder can’t tie in a hood vent. To direct vent a hood, a make up air system (3rd set of ducts after heat pump & ERV) is needed. We don’t have enough mechanical space with a duplex!
there's one in background pic of community centre passivhaus retofit in london here (not mentioned - as good building services aren't!) https://www.mildmaycommunitycentre.org/food/
cool...although I don't have their faith that people are going to make smart choices between recirc and exhaust every single time they use the stove!
Hmm, also doesn't appear to be available in the US.
Not easy to find in UK, but possible at a price. The controls were reasonably smart, in terms of chosing recirc or fresh air on temperature grounds.
Anyway seemed to be high quality kit that works as intended
Do you think if I call Zehnder every year requesting a range hood with integrated make up air or connection to their ERV, that maybe one year I can get that for Christmas?
Perversely, I think we’re better served keeping kitchen hood ventilation detached from whole house ventilation.
And please ask all HVAC system manufacturers? We need multiple options to create competitive pricing. ;)
I have a hard time seeing Passive House going more mainstream without figuring out a way to direct vent range hoods. It’s not much of a chef’s kitchen with a recirc fan with a charcoal filter. I have that and the air from pan fried salmon goes everywhere.
As for the makeup air, really it would be good to get the MHRV to supply extra. But if that's not possible, a supply vent with a motorized damper would be fine.
I do like the idea of a balanced forced air supply providing an air screen/curtain around the cook top, though, if it's easy to clean.
They're in commercial kitchens, but, to my suprise, they're still not a thing for residential, much more sane ventilation rates, so imagine a small one :)
This is the I-HVAC unit I saw at the trade show: ventilation+heating&cooling+DHW+PVinverter+battery+BuildingEnergyManagement. (@energysmartwv.bsky.social would love it!)
Perhaps I read it wrong, but I thought it was attached to the outdoor unit, so it would be limited to what that circuit can do. I gave it a very fast look, am I wrong?
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but no one looking at the grid level view of our infrastructure, believes that we'll be balancing our thermal demands with electrochemistry.
Backup for the sump, ventilation or other emergency loads is fair game.

Anyone else want to add to the list…. ?

A large hood, not too high above the cook top, gets you most of the way there, as to reduce the ventilation rates needed.
I'd skip the heat recovery and preheat.

My leaning is for a whole house battery, but with LifePo batteries getting into the $100/kwh range, this is a great way to integrate them!

Thermal storage integration looks inevitable.
I'd like a 20 kwh backup battery for $6-7K installed, basically a generator replacement.
Add solar and/or a generator if desired.
Mornings are gonna be hard, shifting load to later in the day can be huge.
