That’s also why some use the term ‘enslaved’ instead of ‘slaves’. Because ‘slaves’ inherently applies a natural order to one’s state of being as property as opposed to placing onus on the barbarians whose only historical innovations were in the service of brutality.

Same with ‘color barrier’.

For me, it also emphasizes that every day they spent in captivity was *somebody's conscious and knowing choice*. The enslavers woke up every morning and chose to keep people, often people they knew, enslaved.

I enjoy this facet of Nat’s impact, because it explicitly shows how the rebellion popped the myth that people surrounded themselves with, or at least a few of the people.
