It's basically Slack, with a slightly different threading and more voice support. But every game, every community, every streamer has their own Discord with different channels and rules.
That sounds like a lot of hard work (by which I mean I'd love to move off WhatsApp but I need something thats universally easy to use). When I took this offer of Perplexity Pro for a year it came with Discord so it's interesting to see how it's used
You can use it as a messenger for friends, without opening a particular Discord community. But apart from that the analogy to Slack is a great one. The Discords that I am part of mostly belong to podcasts.
