When I was young I mostly appreciated music based on how it made me feel- excited, sad, angry, whatever. As I get older I can appreciate artists more who don’t have that effect on me.
I watched the Yacht Rock documentary and totally turned into my (pre-covid) father. I used to prefer the OG Doobie Brothers lineup but now I am digging the Michael McDonald years more.
There was an account on the bad site that dubbed steely Dan over videos of all kinds of folks doing all kinds of dancing, somehow on the beat, and it was glorious.
think it's gone now but there was a great post on the old place that said something like "Steely Dan is what happens when you make a band out of some of the best musicians alive and then they suck ass together. I love Steely Dan btw"
we've got this weird dichotomy in my city where the Whole Foods plays classic rock and the Publix plays the worst pop from like 2000-2005. Train, Jason Mraz, etc
Everything prior to Aja is genuinely good- Aja is genuinely good too, it’s just also enraging because its vibe is also somehow so incredibly irritating
