Started last year when my @forbes.com colleague @kylekhanmullins.bsky.social was reporting our piece on JD Vance's valuation.

There were news reports that Vance bought a home in the liberal enclave of Del Ray in Alexandria, Va. But we needed documentation.

Finding docs connecting Vance to a Del Ray home was much harder than it usually is.

So I reached out to residents of that neighborhood, figuring they'd know. And they did (thanks)!

Even with that new knowledge, though, we were still only able to trace the ownership to an anonymous LLC.

At that point, I set an alert on Zillow to notify me if Vance home ever hits the market.

I do this every time I report on a home.

A few weeks ago, I got the alert that it was for sale and shared that info here.

Alerts followed that a sale was pending and then that it was finalized.

Didn't think news was article-worthy yet, but figured it merited some posts here.

After I finished up some other reporting, I went back to it.

The sale had been reported elsewhere. Yikes!.

But as I read the stories, the beneficial owner was not revealed. So, story!

Alexandria's records of the sale gave two places to start--

🏡 the buyer was 9 EDR LLC

🏡 the buyer had a DC address

Let's start by looking up the LLC.

Perhaps there was a bidding war among would-be buyers for the property. Can you rule that out? Look, I despise Vance and all his associates as much as the next sane person, but going straight to "bribe!" seems unreasonable.

I had 2 offers $100k over asking in Maryland last summer. We took the one we liked better. All of the DMV real estate goes over asking.

Yeah, I don’t like the guy, but this article feels click bait. Houses go above ask all the time here, and at that price point… a lobbyist or lawyer is a highly likely buyer
