3 years out & this still sends shivers through me. Chapeaux to all the leaders still trying their best in schools. It’s so damned hard & I’m selfishly glad that’s not me anymore. And chapeaux to all those on the frontline with their heads down churning out great lessons in schools with poor systems.

I reckon this happens because people feel embarrassed or ashamed if they have to remove a few kids so they try and keep a lid on it. Probably compounded by - sense that leaders are making judgements about them because they are availing themselves of the policy, to help manage a tricky group!

Yeah I think so too. Also don't want to feel mean. But the issue often is loads of kids get to the pre removal point then the teacher loses it and removals in latter part of the lesson feel random and unfair.

Great blog. FWIW, I think trying to do much and not following through are the biggest ones but also came here to say “making blanket policy based on a small number of staff not doing the right thing” is the absolute worst in any professional environment!

Also, the amount of time spent following up a relatively minor infraction can mean we don’t feel we have the time. I had 3 students in one afternoon last week that needed follow up actions after I’d followed the behaviour policy and that took me 45 mins with RMs 🤦🏼‍♀️

Reminds me how lucky I am to have such a supportive and reflective LT in my current school. It hasn’t been the case in all of the schools I’ve worked in. It’s easy to say ‘x isn’t happening’ and be heard
which, as you point out, is such an important first step.
